From One Maintenance & Operations Expert to Another: Meet Carlo Tomassetti

As a Maintenance and Operations Manager, ensuring your facility, employees, and equipment are all in optimum operating condition are key components in securing a productive and safe work environment. Staying on top of budgets, scheduling, and ever-changing compliance regulations requires adequate time and resources. Neglecting any of these areas increases the likelihood of production setbacks and puts employees in danger. Carlo Tomassetti, Account Manager for ORR Safety, gives his take on the industry and how he’s partnered with managers to achieve success.
Tell me about your background. What experience do you have working in the safety industry?
Carlo: “I’ve been a part of this industry since 1987. My background in tooling and machining exposed me to many areas of the safety industry. As a certified machinist turned manufacturing engineer working in a high volume automotive facility, worker safety took center stage.”
What do you find the most rewarding about your job with ORR Safety?
Carlo: “One of the most rewarding aspects of my job besides helping people work safely, is helping people solve problems that prevent them from doing their job. It gives me great pleasure to use my knowledge of manufacturing and apply it to a variety of challenges or situations where I can then provide a safe solution.”
What would you say are the biggest pain points or challenges for managers in this field?
Carlo: “I think the biggest challenge in this role is having enough time allocated so that preventative maintenance (PM) can be performed on a proactive schedule vs. a reactive one. When preventative maintenance is not done or rushed, safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effective repairs can be compromised. The risk for employee injury is also greater because without preventative maintenance, the more likely it is for a machine to malfunction.”
In your career, how have you worked with Maintenance and Operations Managers to solve these challenges?
Carlo: “Most recently, I worked with a maintenance manager in a large tire manufacturing facility that was looking for ways his team could safely perform repair operations while on top of processing machines and conveyors, which are high off the ground. After reviewing each area, we were able to come up with a cost-effective fall protection solution.”
How would you say the role of a Shipping & Receiving Manager has changed over the years? How will it continue to change?
Carlo: “I think this role has changed mostly in terms of human resources and the amount of responsibility managers are expected to take on. I’ve seen many companies that are having to do more with less, leaving managers with more work than they have time for.”
How does ORR set itself apart from other safety companies?
Carlo: “Unlike other vendors who are only focused on supplying maintenance departments with high dollar components, ORR Safety is concerned with the big picture. We want to help you evaluate your process from start to finish and provide a total safety solution that fits your budget and helps you to be both safe and efficient.”
