Today, the U.S. freight rail network is widely considered one of the most dynamic freight systems in the world. The $60 billion industry consists of 140,000 miles of rail and provides 221,000 jobs across the country.
Freight rail plays a critical role in society today by transporting products and materials that help fuel our economy. With over 17 billion tons of freight moved each year, there are countless opportunities for accidents such as collisions, derailments, and machinery malfunctions to occur. Whether you are a part of the dispatching division, passenger train personnel, survey and construction personnel, train crew, yard or field operations your personal safety along with the safety of others is ORR Safety’s main priority.
Each department has its own unique needs when it comes to PPE and ORR specializes in designing custom kits to fit each of them. Some examples of kits we have recently designed are bridge rescue kits, traffic control and emergency flagging kits, fall protection kits and spill control kits. Our focus extends beyond the job roles mentioned above to include rail contractors, railroad manufacturers, rescue staff, and more.

Most of the time, you can find Bob in the field meeting with Railroads, railroad contractors, and related companies looking for options to keep their employees safe and healthy.
According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, lower extremity injuries including the knee, ankle, and foot accounted for 29% of all injuries in 2018. Engineers working on and around railroad tracks are exposed to uneven walking surfaces throughout the day. By utilizing the proper fall protection equipment, slip-resistant footwear, and PPE the impact of the fall is greatly reduced, if not prevented altogether.
Whether it’s being hit by falling tools, debris, or moving machinery, workers must be on high alert at all times. Workers can be struck by an object, struck against an object, or caught in an object, equipment, or material. When choosing the appropriate PPE, it’s important to include safety gear that protects an employee’s eyes, face, and head.
Workers who are exposed to high levels of noise on a regular basis are at risk for hearing damage as well as permanent hearing loss. OSHA requires all employees who are exposed to 85 decibels or higher over an eight-hour workday to wear hearing protection. Noise can also be distracting for employees and prevent them from being alert to other hazards such as malfunctioning machinery or approaching railcars.
Workers throughout the railroad industry are affected by working in harsh conditions such as extreme heat, cold, or storms. If you are working on a rip track, tie gang, or bridge gang you’re exposed to a variety of extreme work environments.
While these hazards are reported most frequently, rail workers are also exposed to many other dangers such as hearing loss, hand injuries, and eye injuries. Providing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) isn’t enough. Employers must train their employees on the proper usage as well as monitor them to ensure 100% compliance.
One-size-fits-few vending programs can become a thing of the past. ORR Safety offers a custom online ordering program that allows railroad workers to order PPE and safety supplies that meet their specific needs and preferences. ORR’s custom online catalog offers an expanded range of quality PPE products and allows employees to choose from premier alternatives tailored to enhance fit, form, and function capabilities for their safety needs.
